Today's reflexology has it's origins in the 19th century it was developed by an American physician William Fitzgerald as zone therapy and it was fully developed in the 1930's when Eunice Ingham devised charts of reflex zones for hands and feet.
However archaeologists have found evidence to suggests that applying pressure to feet and hands is an ancient tradition though out many cultures.
One of the oldest suggestions comes from the tomb of the Physician in Egypt dating from 2330 BCE (from a wall hieroglyphic in the tomb) that depicts a form of foot and hand treatment.
And according to an illustrated papyrus from 2500 BC, where a medical practitioner of the time can be seen treating their patients hands and feet, and with a ascription that translate "Do not let it be painful" and "I do as you say".

Chinese and Indian massage both pays particular attention to treating points on the feet.
Specific points on the feet were use by the ancient Chinese to initiate healing.
And the people of India use a form of pressure technique on the feet as part of their system of Ayurvedic medicine.
The American Indians use the concept of treating the whole body by treating the feet in a specific way and this has been pass down through generations and some of them still practised it today.
